McDonald's resists calls for a plastic straw ban

While McDonald's has recently announced a plastic straw ban in its 1.300 UK restaurants, replacing them with paper straws as early as this month, the U.S chain doesn't seem to follow the same lead.

On May 24, the chain's shareholders will be voting on a proposal to launch a study aiming at analyzing the business risks of using plastic straws and the possibility to look into different alternatives.

But the chain's board of directors is urging the shareholders to vote against the study, arguing that the proposal would go against the other environmental initiatives that the chain has taken, such as a pledge to source all packaging from renewable or recycled materials by 2025.
