Too much exposure to certain kinds of plastic could pose a health risk, according to new research. A new study by the University of Plymouth in England shows that there could be a "significant and widespread contamination" of everyday items containing black plastic, such as thermos cups, toys, coat hangers, and Christmas decorations.
Black plastic is mostly recycled from old electronic devices like laptops and music players, and repurposed into household items. Researchers found the presence of additives that can be harmful to human health in most of the products they tested, including food containers and cooking utensils.
The study confirms that the recycling of some plastic items introduces harmful chemicals into everyday items.
