On April 22, we are celebrating the 48th edition of Earth Day, the world’s largest civic-focused day of action followed by over 1 billion people around the world. Events are organised by groups and communities. To actively take part in the global movement and find an event near you, check out the official Earth Day website.
This year, the event is focusing on a global environmental disaster that is at the very heart of the existence of our company: plastic pollution.
The plastic pollution problem
Plastic pollution is a man-made environmental disaster that affects our planet as a whole: in the oceans, it poisons and injures marine life; in our food packaging and the bottled water we drink, it disrupts human hormones and can cause life-threatening diseases and early puberty.
And our exponential consumption of plastic is only making the problem a little bit worse, one day at a time.
Every single minute of every single day, an astronomic 1 million so-called 'disposable' plastic water bottles are consumed. Most of them will, eventually, end up in the water, whether it is voluntarily or by accident: from plastic bottles abandoned on beaches or alongside rivers to the ones collected and dumped in landfills, they play a major part in oceans pollution.
Experts estimate that by 2050 - only 30 years from now! - there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.

Why plastic bottles aren't disposable
Just because you personally dispose of something doesn’t mean that it will be really disposed of. Protecting the oceans from plastic pollution should come from eliminating the need for so-called 'disposable' plastic bottles. Because the truth is, no plastic bottle is disposable.
It takes about 450 years for a plastic bottle to biodegrade and even then, it is never completely gone: as the plastic seems to ‘disappear’, it actually breaks down into harmful microparticles that aren't invisible to the eye but very much present in the soil, the air, and the water you drink... Did you know that over 90% of bottled-water contain microplastics?
How does rOcean help and support the planet?
At rOcean, we are on a mission to tackle the plastic waste crisis: from plastic pollution in the oceans to microplastics in the water we drink, we are putting all our energy into developing a solution to the plastic problem.
But that's not all. Because we care deeply about protecting our planet, our oceans and every creature that lives in them, we are also partnering with non-profit organization The Hydrous and Secore. A percentage of our proceeds is being used to help protect and restore our coral reefs.
We believe that plastic pollution doesn't have to be a fatality. By changing our consumption habits, we can reverse the tide.
We want to empower you to help build a cleaner and better world and end the mass consumption of single-use plastic bottles. Because we know that big changes come by working together.
That's why we came up with a solution.
