Vanuatu to ban plastic bags, straws and containers in July

Things are moving fast in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Starting July 1, Vanuatu will ban plastic bags, plastic straws and polystyrene foam containers in order to protect the environment, following an announcement made in January this year. It will be considered an offense to manufacture and sell such plastic items within one of the 80 islands that counts Vanuatu, with the only exception of plastic containers for fish and meat.

With crystal clear water, lively coral reefs and beautiful sand beaches, Vanuatu is one of the world's popular touristic destination that is directly threatened by plastic pollution. The government is actively working on a plan to become plastic-free, looking into banning plastic forks and knives as well.
